About Lara

Hi, I’m Lara (they/them), also known as the Planted Doula. I’m a queer, non-binary full-spectrum doula, childbirth educator, and community herbalist offering services in Hamilton, ON, its surrounding areas, and virtually.

As a birthworker, I offer support to pregnant people and families throughout the full spectrum of pregnancy and postpartum. Full-spectrum means that I support families through the full range of reproductive experiences, including, but not limited to, birth, postpartum, pregnancy loss, and abortion. Everyone deserves to be seen and supported when it comes to their reproductive health and experience, no matter what their plans or the outcome.

I am especially passionate about working with queer and trans people and members of the LGBTQ+ community, as a queer non-binary doula. I know that many queer and trans folks face barriers when starting their families and throughout their pregnancies. Families can be created in a multitude of ways, and that not all families look the same.

You deserve to feel safe and comfortable throughout pregnancy and postpartum. I make it a priority to get to know you and to ensure that you receive the quality care and support that you need and deserve.

In addition to offering birth, postpartum, and abortion doula support, I also offer prenatal classes to help you prepare for birth and postpartum, as well as infant feeding consultations to offer support for nursing, bottle feeding, and more.

Queer birth doula and postpartum doula Lara as a child, wearing a purple shirt and standing in a garden with tall green plants.

When you  work with me, you are not only getting me and my extensive knowledge of all things pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, but also the years of knowledge I accumulated prior to beginning this work. Prior to becoming a birthworker, I completed a Masters Degree in Sexual Dissidence and wrote a dissertation titled “Biopower and the American Maternal Mortality Crisis: Race, Capitalism, and Medicalization.” When you work with me you might catch a hint of my academic background, I love to research and gather curated information for my clients.

I’ve been firmly planted in care work my whole adult life, and even before then. Prior to becoming a doula I worked in a variety of caring roles, including 10+ years as a childcare provider. Birthwork is incredibly fulfilling to me;

I love building relationships with my clients and helping them through the big transitions that come with reproductive choices and new parenthood.

For me, care work starts at the roots; we have to understand where people are coming from to support them in getting to where they want to go. To my practice, I bring an understanding of different systems of oppression and how different social structures can and do impact reproduction, pregnancy, and birth.

My doula work is firmly rooted in the principles of reproductive justice, anti-racism, harm reduction, trauma informed care, and has a decolonial framework. I recognize the political nature of birth, abortion, pregnancy, and parenthood, and that different social structures can and do impact pregnancy and birth.

As such, I attempt to make my doula services as accessible as possible and want to work with you to make sure you get  the  care that you need, in a  way that you can access  it. My services are all available on a sliding scale, and I will work with you to create an accessible payment plan that caters to your individual needs. I strive to create a safe and judgement free environment with and for my clients.

 I would be honoured to accompany you in growing and tending to your garden.

The concept of the Planted Doula was born out of my love of plants and working with herbal medicine in combination with my practice as a birth worker. This name represents the grounded nature of care work and for me sparks thoughts about the parallels between starting a family and planting a garden. Plants hold so much magic and complexity, and they belong to systems of care amongst themselves, not unlike us.

I live and work on unceded Indigenous territory. Doing birthwork and herbalism on stolen land comes with a responsibility to recognize my positionality and continuously learn about the past and present impacts of colonialism. This also means actively and consistently supporting Indigenous folks and their resistance to ongoing colonialism.
